Epilogue-One Step at a Time

Three Months Later

Tigress had gone through a tiring day of training and catching several bandits along the road. She walked back home, rubbing her scratches from that pesky dog that had tried to get away. Her anger didn’t stay for long—her mind wandered to Mai and Tai Lung.

How was she doing? Had Tai Lung killed her? Was he kind? How was he healing? How was Mai putting up? What was the secret ingredient in her spicy soup? How to make the bread? Did she miss her?

Cuz she sure did miss Mai.

The last letter had answered her personal questions that she couldn’t pose to anyone else. But she still had more. Mai had told her Tai Lung could walk now, and his arm was completely healed, his scars weren’t bothering him anymore, he was much more calm, and he understood the Dragon Scroll. It’d taken her a little bit to comprehend it.

She still couldn’t believe that Mai had gotten to it!

And each letter she hid, and of course, told no one. She even had to hike up to an old hut to retrieve the messenger hawk, Jing. She named it herself, and fed it dead rats to its heart’s delight. Tigress took the path and retreated into the forest hiking up the mountain to the Hut on the Crag.

Years of ghost stories had kept most kids from playing around, but never kept Tigress away. She knew that this was the perfect place. No one ever came here, save the rats that passed by. She came up and hoped that Jing was here. It’d been two weeks, so he should be here, waiting for her.

Working her way up the old trail quickly, she came to the clearing where the hut stood, near a craggy cliff. She went in, and took a seat by the window.

A brown hawk cried out and flew into the hut, landing on a high perch. He cried again and opened his wings, settling down.

Tigress pulled a rat she’d killed in the palace pantry and tossed it up to him. The hawk flew up and caught it, coming to perch on the windowsill. Tigress untied the letter from the and hastily opened it up. She read it:

Dear Tigress,
I miss you everyday. You’re right—the tides ebb and flow, just like the poem. I wish you could be here. The sunsets are beautiful, the whole sky lighting up and the water reflects it. No, I don’t leave the basil in the pea soup, I take it out after it cools before I serve it. The basil’s good for flavor, but unless you’re Baba, the basil leaf itself is disgusting.

Questions 2-8-Yes. No. No. No. Yes. Yes. Yes. First one sounds much better.

Yes, Tai Lung’s much better. He is back to morning meditation and practice, just like you do in the early morning. His scars are even better, but they will always be there, just as mine are.

Yes, I love him. I can’t stop loving him—just as you can’t stop eating my cookies. Have you used the recipe I sent you? You’ll have to keep them from Po—he’ll gobble them down in a second.

I miss you very much, and Tai Lung is much better. I think that we may come back if he keeps progressing. His healing’s gone much better out here. I want you to see him. But I worry—what if he collapses back into hatred? Minds are fragile. I don’t know.

But I want to come home badly.

I miss you all dearly. You’re like my children. Especially you. You’re my favorite (shh, don’t tell anyone) but you are.

Love, Mai Song

P.S.—How is Shifu doing? Tai Lung wants to know. He feels very badly.

Tigress smiled and held the note close. She could smell Mai’s sweet scent on the paper and even a whiff of Tai Lung. She wanted Mai to come home. But what if she was right? If Tai Lung couldn’t handle it? She then thought of a bit of advice that Mai’d given her once.  Tigress proceeded to sit down and write back, adding it at the bottom.

‘We’ll take it one step at a time,’ she wrote.
The epilogue! I may make a sequel. I dunno. If I do, new characters will be introduced. If I don't, then, well, yeah. Enjoy.

For the last time, I own Mai Song, nothing else. Thank-you whoever came up with Kung Fu Panda, and don't sue me for using your idea.
